What "ego" means in the system
The heart center, also called the ego or will center, is tied in the system to willpower, promises and the sense of one's own worth. It is small, with only four gates and four channels, which makes it the motor that is defined least often.
When the heart is defined and nothing higher in the ranking is, it becomes the final guide. Instead of reading a gut reaction or waiting for a wave, you check your own willingness. The decision comes down to whether you want something enough to commit your effort to it.
Two forms
The system separates ego authority into two versions, depending on what the heart is wired to.
| Form | For | Heart connects to | In practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ego manifested | Manifestor | The throat, through gates 21 and 45 | The will goes straight to speech. These people often know what they want when they hear themselves say it. |
| Ego projected | Projector | The G center, through gates 25 and 51 | No motor is attached to the throat, so the will has to be looked at through conversation. |
The manifested form fits the Manifestor's habit of informing others. In the projected form, a Projector is advised to talk it through with someone trusted and listen to what they hear themselves say.
Both forms follow the same ranking and the same central question. The difference is the route the will takes to reach words.
Questions to ask yourself
The testThe guide is not "what would be good" but "what do I want enough to commit to".
- Do I truly want this, or do I think I should?
- Would I still keep this promise on a day when it is inconvenient?
- Am I saying yes to prove something to someone?
- Do I have the energy for what this takes? Projectors in particular are warned in the system not to spend will they do not have.
A promise made from the heart center is described as carrying more weight than a promise from the head. People with ego authority are told to be careful about what they sign up for, because the system says broken promises of this kind are costly to them.
Take a Manifestor who is asked to run a regional office. The role pays well and looks impressive. With ego authority, the useful question is not whether it is a good opportunity but whether they want the daily weight of it badly enough to keep promising their time. If the honest answer is a pause, that pause is the information.
Common difficulties
- Confusing want with duty. Many people with this authority say yes to things because it seems generous or expected.
- Promising too much. The heart center is described as having bursts of will but not endless supply, so a bold promise can run into depleted willpower later.
Try thisIt helps to name the limit when you make the commitment.
What this looks like in your chart
The heart is the small triangle right of center, below the throat. It is filled in when defined. Its gates are 21, 40, 26 and 51. It connects through these channels:
| Runs to | Channel |
|---|---|
| The throat | 21-45 |
| The G center | 25-51 |
| The spleen | 26-44 |
| The solar plexus | 37-40 |
For ego authority, the solar plexus, sacral and spleen must all be open, so the heart can connect only to the throat or the G center.
The free calculator will show the authority by name. Compare it with splenic authority, which also belongs to Manifestors and Projectors. The guide to reading your chart explains the ranking.
Ego authority is an idea from inside Human Design, with no outside test behind it. The method page explains how this site frames that.
