What the center is for
The ajna is described as the processing center. Raw material comes in from the head, as questions and doubts, and from the senses and from other centers. The ajna sorts this into models of how things work.
It is an awareness center, which means it takes in and interprets information. It is not a motor, it does not supply energy, and the system does not give it any authority. It forms a view, then hands the view to the throat to be spoken or acted on.
Gates and connections
| Runs to | Channels |
|---|---|
| The head | 4-63, 24-61, 47-64 |
| The throat | 11-56, 17-62, 23-43 |
The ajna has no direct links to any center other than the head and the throat.
When the ajna is defined
A defined ajna is described as a fixed style of thinking. The person tends to approach problems in a consistent way, and the opinions that come out of it are stable. If you tend to be recognized for a particular way of seeing things, that is the kind of pattern the system points to.
The caution is rigidity. A fixed style means you are less likely to change your mind when someone offers another approach.
RememberThe system suggests staying curious about views that do not fit your own.
When the ajna is open
An open ajna has no fixed way of processing. The system says it can adopt the thinking style of whoever is near and consider a question from many sides. A person with it might read an argument from one viewpoint in the morning and from the opposite in the afternoon, and find both plausible.
The not-self theme is pretending to be certain. Because an open ajna is flexible, it can feel awkward to say "I don't know".
Try thisInstead of pretending to be certain, say "I can see it two ways". The system calls that honest answer the open ajna's strength.
Example: a team is making a decision, and everyone wants the open-ajna member to settle it. They say they need to hear the arguments again. That is not indecision in the system's view. It is how this center works.
Defined, open and the types
Every type except the Reflector can have a defined ajna, and no type depends on it. In a Projector with mental authority it is one of the few defined centers in the chart, which is the case where the system says conversation, and not an inner signal, does the work.
Things people mix up
- Not intelligence. Neither state is smarter.
- Not a decision maker. It forms a view; the decision comes from your authority.
- A borrowed name. It is from the chakra tradition, but the Human Design description is about thinking.
What this looks like in your chart
Find the downward-pointing triangle below the head. If it is filled, the ajna is defined, which means at least one of its six channels is complete. A channel fills both of its ends, so a defined ajna always comes with a defined head, a defined throat, or both.
The free chart calculator shows which centers are defined in your chart, and the reading guide explains the symbols.
These are the system's claims about thinking, and no research stands behind them. The method page says how to read them with that in mind.
