What the center is for
The throat is the only center whose work is to make things visible. The system treats it as the place where what the rest of the chart produces gets said or done. A thought from the ajna, an emotion from the solar plexus or an urge from the sacral all have to pass through the throat to appear in the world.
That is why its connections matter so much. A throat without a link to a motor is described as having a voice but not the drive behind it. A throat wired to a motor is described as being able to start things.
Gates and connections
| Runs to | Channels |
|---|---|
| The ajna | 11-56, 17-62, 23-43 |
| The G center | 1-8, 7-31, 10-20, 13-33 |
| The spleen | 16-48, 20-57 |
| The heart | 21-45 |
| The solar plexus | 12-22, 35-36 |
| The sacral | 20-34 |
The head and the root have no direct channel to the throat.
When the throat is defined
A defined throat is said to give a recognizable way of expressing yourself. People with it tend to speak in the same manner at a funeral and at a party, and they seldom feel they need to perform to be heard.
The system adds that a defined throat makes you easier to read for the people around you, because the pattern repeats. Some find that steady quality a relief. Others find it limiting when they want to try a different voice.
When the throat is open
An open throat has no fixed voice. The system says a person with it can speak in many registers, adapting to each room. The advantage is range. The risk is that you may talk to fill silence, or raise your voice for attention, which the system names as the not-self theme.
An open-throat person might be talkative with old friends, nearly silent in a meeting of strangers and forceful when a subject matters, and the system treats all three as ordinary.
Try thisWait to be asked, or speak when the topic really matters to you. A rule of thumb from teachers is that people will listen more when you are not trying to be heard.
The throat and your type
The throat decides the type in a specific way. Look for any of the four motors (sacral, heart, solar plexus, root) connected to it through a chain of defined channels.
| Sacral | Motor linked to the throat | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Defined | Yes | Manifesting Generator |
| Defined | No | Generator |
| Open | Yes | Manifestor |
| Open | No, with some defined center | Projector |
A throat linked to the G center, with no motor, is also the signature of self-projected authority.
What this looks like in your chart
Look for the square under the ajna. If it is filled in, at least one of the channels listed above is complete. If it is pale, none of them is. Then follow the lines downward from any filled motor to see whether they reach the throat.
Our free chart calculator marks the throat as defined or open, and the guide to reading your chart shows how to follow the chains.
The rules for type follow exactly from the chart calculation, while the meaning attached to them is Human Design's own. The method page draws that line.
