What the center is for
The system treats the solar plexus as the home of emotion in the broad sense: not only anger or sadness but also passion, longing, hope and the sense of a room's atmosphere. It is the only center that is a motor and an awareness center at once, so it both supplies energy and takes in information.
The distinctive claim is that this center moves in a wave. Feelings rise toward a peak, fall toward a trough and climb again. The wave can last minutes, days or weeks, and the system says no point on it holds the full truth.
Gates and connections
| Runs to | Channels |
|---|---|
| The throat | 12-22, 35-36 |
| The heart | 37-40 |
| The sacral | 6-59 |

The solar plexus has no direct link to the head, ajna, G center or spleen.
When the solar plexus is defined
A defined solar plexus gives you your own wave. It runs whatever else is happening, and the system says it is the reason defined people may seem moody to others even when nothing external has changed. The practice that follows is patience. That is the content of emotional authority.
RememberDecide big things after the wave has been through several states.
It also affects relationships. People near someone with a defined solar plexus may feel their emotional weather as something they have to adjust to. Being open about where you are on the wave helps others avoid taking the mood personally.
When the solar plexus is open
An open solar plexus has no personal wave. The system says that instead it takes in the emotions of people nearby and magnifies them. A calm person with an open solar plexus can leave a tense meeting feeling frantic, or arrive at a cheerful party and become cheerful without trying.
This can be a strength. People with an open solar plexus are often described as perceptive about how a room feels, and as steady when they are alone.
The not-self theme is avoiding confrontation and truth. Since tension feels uncomfortable when amplified, a person may hurry to smooth it over, say what is expected, or go quiet.
Try thisWhen strong emotion appears, ask: "Is this mine, or did I pick it up from someone?" The question does not always have an answer, but it gives you a pause.
A comparison
Picture two people at a family gathering where two relatives are quarreling.
- Defined solar plexus. Feels something rise in them too, and plans to talk about it later when they know what they think.
- Open solar plexus. Feels the tension in their own body, and may leave the room without knowing whether they are upset or merely absorbing the quarrel.
The system describes both as normal.
What this looks like in your chart
Look for the triangle on the lower right. It is filled in when any of its seven channels is complete, and pale when none is. A filled solar plexus gives you emotional authority, the highest-ranking authority in the system.
Our free chart calculator shows whether it is defined. The guide to reading your chart explains the ranking of authorities.
The emotional wave is a Human Design concept and not a measured effect. The method page has the longer discussion.
