Reflector in Human Design

In Human Design, a Reflector is a person with no defined centers. All nine are open. The type is rare, the strategy is to wait a lunar cycle before a major decision, and the theme the system gives for living correctly is surprise.

What makes someone a Reflector

Every other type has at least one center colored in. A center becomes defined when a complete channel, two gates joined across a gap, links it to another center. A Reflector has gates activated in the chart, but none of them pair up to close a channel.

That is why the picture looks empty, and why the type is so rare. A chart holds 26 activations, 13 from the birth moment and 13 from the design moment, and none of them may complete any of the 36 channels.

Strategy: wait a lunar cycle

The system links the Reflector to the Moon, which passes through all 64 gates in about 27.3 days. The recommendation is to let a major decision stretch across that whole cycle instead of resolving it in an afternoon. This is a slower pace than most people use, so it is for large choices only. Small ones can be made normally.

In practice it might look like this. You are offered a job in another city.

  1. Write the offer down, then check on it every few days.
  2. Notice how it feels on a day you are in a crowded room, and again on a day you are alone.
  3. Talk it through with two or three people you trust, and listen to yourself as you do.
  4. After a full cycle, read back your notes to see what stayed the same.
The test

The system treats the repeated feeling, not any single day's reaction, as the useful result.

Open everywhere

With nine open centers, a Reflector is described as taking in the traits of everyone nearby. The result can be a feeling of being different people in different rooms. The teaching reads this as a sampling ability: a Reflector can sense the health of a group, a workplace or a neighborhood better than people who are fixed in their own patterns.

Remember

The environment matters more for this type than any other. Where you live, who you spend time with and what the room feels like are described as central, not optional.

Surprise and disappointment

The not-self theme is disappointment. It shows up when a Reflector tries to hold on to a fixed identity, or commits to someone else's pace, and the match turns out wrong. The signature is surprise, the feeling of being delighted by things you did not predict. Some teachers add delight as a second word for this.

The birth time warning

The Moon moves faster than any other body in the chart, about 13 degrees a day. Each gate covers 5.625 degrees, so the Moon crosses a gate in roughly ten hours. In some Reflector charts the Moon sits in a gate that happens not to complete a channel. If the recorded birth time is off by a few hours, the Moon may land in a neighboring gate that does, and the same person would then get a different type.

Watch for

Anyone who gets a Reflector result should check the time on an official record.

Authority

All Reflectors share lunar authority, because no center is defined to supply anything else.

What this looks like in your chart

All nine centers appear pale or open, and there is no defined channel. No colored center connects to another. If you see this, our free chart calculator will have labeled you a Reflector. If you do not see it, compare with Projector or one of the other types.

Questions

What is a Reflector in Human Design?

A Reflector is the type with no defined centers, so all nine are open. The system describes Reflectors as sensitive to their surroundings, with moods and views that change with the people and places around them.

How rare are Reflectors?

Teaching material usually gives about 1 percent of people, which makes it by far the rarest type. A figure like that is an estimate, and it should not be read as a count from a survey.

What is the Reflector strategy?

To wait one lunar cycle, about a month, before a major decision. Over that time you talk it through, notice how it feels on different days, and see whether the answer holds.

Why does the Reflector chart look empty?

Because no center is defined. A center becomes defined only when a complete channel joins it to another, and a Reflector has none. Gates can still be active, but they do not close into channels.

Can a wrong birth time make me a Reflector by mistake?

Yes, it can go either way. The Moon changes gate roughly every 10 hours, so a small error can complete or break a channel and shift the type. Double-check the time on your birth record.
